Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been rebuffed in their attempts to sign Peterborough United youngster Benjamin Mensah.
A recent report from Football Insider has offered an update on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Benjamin Mensah. The Premier League giants had recently made a formal approach for the Peterborough United defender, but it appears their £200,000 offer has been rejected by the Championship outfit.
A right-back by trade, Mensah had been a part of Peterborough since 2019, when he joined the club from the Aston Villa academy. The youngster is regarded as one of the most gifted players at the club, having showcased immense potential at the youth level. He has even made four senior appearances for Peterborough United, though all of those came in the EFL Trophy.
However, during his time at the club, Mensah has been unlucky with injuries. He has been on the sidelines for a long period of time, which has hindered his growth at Peterborough. Nevertheless, the youngster is still rated highly by the club’s hierarchy, and it appears Tottenham Hotspur have a similar view towards the player as well.
The Lilywhites’ bid for the youngster suggests they are keen on snapping him up as part of the club’s plan to reinforce the youth teams. It has been a while since Tottenham have managed to integrate young talents into the first team. They are hoping to break the chain with the addition of some talented young players, including the 19-year-old prodigy.
Mensah was targeted as a potential reinforcement for the club’s reserve team. The plan was to help him grow further as a footballer at the youth level before eventually giving him the promotion to the senior side.
But it appears Peterborough have no intention to offload their star player in January, having rejected the £200,000 bid from Spurs. It is apparent that the Championship outfit value the player highly and would like to hand him his professional breakthrough sooner rather than later.
The report suggests Tottenham have a plan to sign Mensah permanently in January, allowing him to spend the remainder of the season on loan at Peterborough United. It might hand them a better opportunity of landing the youngster, although it remains to be seen whether the Premier League giants come up with a second bid for the English prodigy.
Meanwhile, Spurs are reportedly on the verge of securing their first signing of the January transfer window in the form of Adama Traore. Tottenham have reportedly had their latest bid for the explosive forward accepted by Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the Spanish international soon set for a medical in north London.
