Transfer News: Tottenham interested in signing Benjamin Mensah

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among the clubs monitoring the development of Peterborough United wonderkid Benjamin Mensah.

According to the Peterborough Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur have made an enquiry regarding Benjamin Mensah. As confirmed by Peterborough United’s director of football Barry Fry, Spurs are among the clubs to have asked about the availability of the 19-year-old defender, whose progress they are closely monitoring.

A right-back by trade, Mensah was part of the Aston Villa youth academy before he joined Peterborough in 2019. He has since enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence and was deservedly promoted to the reserve side at the start of the season.

The 19-year-old has made four senior appearances for Peterborough United so far. However, his development at the club has been halted to an extent, due to several injuries that have kept him on the sidelines. In fact, the youngster is yet to make a senior appearance for Peterborough since last season.

Mensah’s struggles with injury have not deterred Tottenham Hotspur, though, with the north Londoners well aware of his talents and the potential to become a top player in Europe.

The Lilywhites are in for a major rebuild under Antonio Conte, especially in the defensive unit. The Italian tactician is already prepared to offload multiple fringe players at the club, with Japhet Tanganga among the players linked with an exit amid interest from Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan.

Even Matt Doherty is likely to be offloaded in the near future, with Conte reportedly keen on signing Adama Traore in an attempt to add more competition for Emerson Royal in the right wing-back slot.

The addition of Benjamin Mensah, to that end, could be an interesting future investment for the club. As mentioned earlier, the English wonderkid is brimming with potential and has what it takes to become a Premier League player.

However, Barry Fry has confirmed that Peterborough have no intention of offloading Mensah anytime soon. The Championship outfit have already rejected Tottenham’s approach for the 19-year-old and are likely to keep him on their books for the coming years.

It could prove to be a blessing in disguise for Tottenham, essentially giving them the opportunity to develop a much more detailed profile on Mensah once he recovers from his injury setbacks and potentially makes an impact in the Championship.
