Transfer News: Newcastle United join race to sign Gleison Bremer

Newcastle United are reportedly prepared to make a move for Torino star Gleison Bremer as Eddie Howe sets his sights on a centre-back.

According to a report from Daily Mail, Newcastle United have set their sights on Gleison Bremer. The 24-year-old Torino defender has emerged as an ideal target for Eddie Howe as he looks to reinforce his defensive unit in this January transfer window.

Considered as one of the best centre-halves in Serie A, Bremer has enjoyed immense success since his move to Torino in the summer of 2018. The Brazilian defender has notched up almost 100 competitive appearances for the club, emerging as a mainstay in the Torino backline while helping the club remain in the Italian top-flight.

In addition to his defensive work rate and no-nonsense mentality, Bremer has caught the attention with his leadership and the ability to read the game. It has certainly made him an attractive option for Newcastle United, among many clubs in European football, including Inter Milan.

Having recently signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe is prepared to set his sights on a central defender. The Magpies have approached top target Sven Botman, but the Dutchman is unlikely to be released by reigning French champions LOSC Lille, despite lucrative offers.

The failed pursuit of Botman has compelled Newcastle United to look into other alternatives. They have been linked with a move for Benoit Badiashile, but it looks as though Howe favours a more proven and established leader like Bremer.

As mentioned earlier, the Brazilian has made a name for himself with his consistent performances in Serie A, and it is only a matter of time before he joins a bigger club. A move to NUFC, to that end, could be a step in the right direction, knowing a breakthrough in the Premier League might help him sneak into the Brazilian squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

However, the Magpies are set to face stiff competition from other top clubs in the pursuit of the defender. While Inter Milan remain keen on the 24-year-old, Premier League rivals like Chelsea have been linked with a move for the Torino centre-back as well, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Bremer as he looks to take the next step in his career.
