Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is reportedly keen on joining Barcelona on a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan striker is keen on running down his Manchester United contract before joining the Blaugrana on a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.
Edinson Cavani joined Manchester United on a free transfer on deadline day in the summer transfer window of 2020. The 34-year-old was initially written off as a panic buy but made an immediate impact for the Red Devils, scoring 17 goals in the 2020/21 season.
But the ongoing campaign has been one to forget as a spate of injuries has blighted Cavani, who has also had to share game-time following Cristiano Ronaldo’s return last summer. As a result, the Uruguayan striker has managed only two goals in 572 minutes of game-time across competitions for Manchester United.
Cavani’s future at Manchester United is shrouded in uncertainty, as he is in the final year of his contract with the club and is unlikely to renew terms with the Red Devils. That has also been confirmed by Fichajes, with the report claiming that Cavani will not sign a new contract at Old Trafford and will aim to join Barcelona in the summer.
The Blaugrana had been heavily linked with the Manchester United striker over a possible January move before they cooled their interest in him. Alvaro Morata has since emerged as the alternative to the Manchester United striker, although a move for the Spanish international might be beyond Barcelona’s means.
In all likelihood, a striker will only arrive at Camp Nou in the summer, with Erling Haaland being Barcelona’s priority target. The Catalan giants are currently scrambling for ways to bypass their financial woes to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker, with a part-exchange deal involving Sergino Dest a possibility.
But with Martin Braithwaite and Luuk de Jong likely to depart Camp Nou in the summer, Barcelona will need to sign two strikers, making Cavani a viable option. While the Manchester United striker will only be a short-term solution, his arrival on a Bosman move could ease Barcelona’s woes up front. But Cavani will not go anywhere this month, with Ralf Rangnick confirming the same recently.
