Getafe are reportedly keen on signing Borja Mayoral from fellow La Liga club Real Madrid in the ongoing transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Cadena COPE, Borja Mayoral is the subject of interest from Getafe over a move in the January transfer window. The La Liga club is eyeing the 24-year-old forward as an alternative to Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz.
Borja Mayoral has been with Real Madrid since joining their youth setup in 2007. After eight years playing age-group football, the Spaniard made his first-team debut for Los Blancos in October 2015 but has only completed one full season at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The 24-year-old has spent five seasons on loan away from Real Madrid, with his latest stint being at AS Roma. Mayoral joined the Serie A giants in October 2020 on a two-season loan deal and has endured a mixed bag of a spell at Stadio Olimpico.
While Mayoral was superb in the 2020/21 season, his stock has plummeted since the arrival of Jose Mourinho, with the former Real Madrid manager using his sparingly. The player has managed to garner only 249 minutes of game-time this term, mustering one goal and one assist in the process.
Recent reports have claimed that Mayoral’s loan stint at Roma could end this month, with Real Madrid scouring for options to find him a new club. The 24-year-old has been linked with several clubs, including Crystal Palace, with Getafe now emerging as a possible suitor.
The Azulones share a healthy working relationship with Real Madrid, having been linked with a loan move for Antonio Blanco and a possible swoop for Mariano Diaz. Reports have even claimed that the La Liga club has submitted an enquiry to Real Madrid for Mariano.
But signing Mariano is not a certainty, which is why Borja Mayoral has emerged as an alternative for Getafe. The keenness to sign a striker perhaps stems from the inconsistencies of Getafe’s strikers, with Enes Unal the only centre-forward to deliver the goods satisfactorily.
Signing Mayoral could thus be a step in the right direction, with the 24-year-old also needing a change of scenery to get his career back on track. However, if they are unable to land the Real Madrid forward, Getafe could set sights on Borja Baston instead.
