Transfer News: Real Madrid set sights on Giovanni Reyna

Real Madrid are reportedly keeping tabs on the progress of Borussia Dortmund and USMNT prodigy Giovanni Reyna with a possible summer move in the works.

According to a report from Fichajes, Real Madrid are interested in Borussia Dortmund sensation Giovanni Reyna and could consider making a summer swoop to sign the teenage attacking midfielder.

Reyna, born in Durham, England, started his footballing journey in the United States with the academy of New York City FC. The youngster returned to Europe in 2019, signing for Dortmund. The youngster broke into the first-team setup at Signal Iduna Park in early 2020 and showed glimpses of his quality very early into his senior career.

Reyna, to date, has featured 69 times for the Black and Yellows, scoring ten goals and registering 11 assists. The ongoing campaign started on a promising note for the 19-year-old after he was handed the No. 7 jersey following the departure of Jadon Sancho. However, a serious muscle injury he sustained in August has kept him out of action so far.

Nonetheless, the attacking midfielder, who has been capped nine times by the United States Men’s National Team, has managed to attract the attention of La Liga giants Real Madrid.

The Merengues will soon be preparing for a mini-overhaul in midfield as Luka Modric winds down his illustrious career while Toni Kroos is also entering the final phase of his career. With the likes of Isco and Dani Ceballos also set to move on, there will be vacancies in the midfield department at the Santiago Bernabeu that will need to be filled shortly.

While Reyna is not exactly a No. 8, the midfielder’s ball-carrying abilities and the knack of playing defence-splitting passes can make him a quality addition to the Real Madrid midfield unit. Furthermore, the youngster has shown the versatility to play out wide if needed, which would only boost the squad dynamics, giving the manager with more options to work with.

However, luring him away from Signal Iduna Park will be a huge challenge. Dortmund, who lost Sancho in 2021 and are bracing themselves for the departure of Erling Haaland later this year, are unlikely to sanction the sale of Reyna, who is regarded as the future of the team. The teenage prodigy has a contract with the German giants until the summer of 2025, meaning that they are also in a strong negotiating position.
