Transfer News: Leicester City join Liverpool, Tottenham in Todd Cantwell pursuit

Leicester City have reportedly joined Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and a host of other clubs in the race to sign Norwich City ace Todd Cantwell in January.

According to a report from The Sun, Leicester City have entered the race for the signing of Norwich City attacking midfielder Todd Cantwell, who is also on the radars of fellow Premier League clubs Liverpool and Tottenham, among others.

Cantwell came through the ranks at Norwich City and helped the club to two promotions to the Premier League over the past four years. The 23-year-old has racked up 110 appearances for the Canaries, producing a return of 14 goals and 12 assists.

While he started the ongoing campaign as a regular in the side, the versatile attacking midfielder fell out of favour towards the end of Daniel Farke’s stint as manager. That has continued since Dean Smith took over the reins. With the Englishman not favoured at Carrow Road and his contract running out at the end of the season, Cantwell’s future seems set to be away from the club.

Several clubs have shown an interest in signing the 23-year-old, with Leicester now entering the fray to capture him, along with the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Leicester have been well below their usual level this season, with inconsistent performances seeing them crash out of the UEFA Europa League and fall out of the race for a top-six finish. James Maddison has found some form of late but struggled in the early parts of the campaign.

With the likes of Ayoze Perez, Ademola Lookman not performing consistently, the Foxes could do with adding another creative player like Cantwell to the ranks to carry the load along with Maddison and Harvey Barnes. However, they will have to face competition from many other clubs, including Liverpool and Tottenham.

The interest from Liverpool could stem from the absence of their key attackers, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who are away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Someone like Cantwell, with his versatility and proven pedigree in the Premier League, can be a handy addition to fill in until their return. At the same time, he could potentially be seen as a replacement for Xherdan Shaqiri who left the club last summer.

As for Tottenham, question marks are hanging over the future of several of their attacking talents like Dele Alli, Steven Bergwijn, Giovani Lo Celso, while there have been reports of Bryan Gil going on out loan as well. If any of those players end up leaving, the Lilywhites can look to reinforce the squad with someone like Cantwell, who will be available for a fee of £15 million, according to the report.

Apart from the three clubs mentioned above, the likes of Leeds United, AS Roma, Newcastle United are also keeping tabs on the 23-year-old’s situation at Norwich City. It remains to be seen if he leaves Carrow Road before the end of the month or leaves on a free transfer in the summer.
