Wolves are interested in re-signing out-of-favour Tottenham right-back Matt Doherty in January as they seek a reliable cover for Nelson Semedo.

According to Football Insider, Wolves are keen on bringing back Matt Doherty in the January window as Bruno Lage eyes a reliable backup to Nelson Semedo.

Wolves have been one of the most improved sides in the Premier League this season, with Bruno Lage changing the mentality at the Molineux Stadium. They are operating on a thin squad, with depth a major issue the manager seeks to solve in January.

Their lack of cover in important areas is needed to be addressed, with right-back one of the key positions in Lage’s opinion. Following their recent victory over Manchester United, the Portuguese boss highlighted the importance of his full-backs to give the team an impetus in attack.

Nelson Semedo remains the only reliable option at right-back, and Lage will be keen to bring in quality back-up for the Portuguese. They have former star Matt Doherty in their sights, with Wolves prepared to make an offer imminently for the Spurs star.

Doherty started brightly at Tottenham following his transfer from Wolves 18 months ago. However, he has fallen down the pecking order under all three managers, namely Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and now Antonio Conte. The summer arrival of Emerson Royal all but killed his chances of regular football this term, with Japhet Tanganga ahead of him in the pecking order.

Doherty’s fall from grace at Tottenham could allow Wolves to bring him back to the Midlands. According to the report, Wolves are prepared to make a permanent offer or a loan with an obligation to buy. Doherty is one of several defensive targets this January for Lage, who is also seeking a reliable centre-back, with Sven Botman on his radar.

These defensive signings could become a priority for Lage in this window, as he looks to shore up his back line for a difficult second half of the season ahead.
