Manchester United and Newcastle United are reportedly keeping tabs on the development of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Oliver Skipp.
According to a report from Fichajes, Manchester United and Newcastle United are following the progress of Tottenham Hotspur youngster Oliver Skipp, who is enjoying a fine breakthrough season in the Premier League.
A product of the Tottenham Hotspur youth academy, Skipp has been with the north London outfit since 2013 and has risen through the ranks at a rapid rate. The young midfielder made his senior debut back in 2018 under then-manager Mauricio Pochettino and featured sporadically since.
However, a hugely successful loan spell away at Norwich City during the 2020/21 campaign put Skipp firmly on the map. This season, he has established himself as a permanent fixture in the Tottenham midfield alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. To date, the 21-year-old has featured 46 times for the Lilywhites, with 23 of his appearances coming in the ongoing campaign.
Skipp’s rise to prominence at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has seemingly not gone unnoticed, with Manchester United and Newcastle United now taking an interest in the England Under-21 international’s development.
Manchester United will be in the market for a new central midfielder as Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek are both staring at uncertain futures at Old Trafford. The former is out of contract at the end of the season, while the latter is looking to move away after failing to establish himself in the Premier League. Furthermore, Nemanja Matic is also not getting any younger and will need to be replaced.
The 20-time English champions could potentially look to sign two midfielders before next season. Declan Rice has been linked heavily as the long-term replacement for Matic in the defensive midfield role. But Skipp has now emerged as an alternative for the West Ham United midfielder who can cost a bomb in the summer.
As for Newcastle, the Magpies could be set for a huge summer later this year, provided they can avoid the drop from the Premier League at the end of the season. Backed by their new owners, the Toon are planning some ambitious swoops, including a highly audacious plan to sign Pogba on a free transfer when his Manchester United deal runs out.
Skipp, too, could be an exciting young addition to the midfield department that has largely underwhelmed in the ongoing season. However, signing him from Tottenham will be anything but straightforward, considering that they rate him very highly and are thinking of handing the young midfielder a new contract.
For now, Skipp has piqued the interest of both Manchester United and Newcastle United, who will continue to follow his progress keenly over the coming months.
