Transfer News: Newcastle United interested in Dominic Solanke

Newcastle United are interested in Dominic Solanke, although Bournemouth may not agree to a sale considering the Englishman’s importance to the side.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United could target Championship star Dominic Solanke in January to offset the loss of Callum Wilson. Bournemouth may not agree to a deal considering the striker’s contributions and importance to their hopes of promotion back to the Premier League.

Newcastle United are staring at the biggest and most important transfer window in their history as they seek important signings to mount a successful battle against the threat of relegation. The Magpies have been in bad form this term and remain second from the bottom on the table, becoming one of the favourites to drop into the Championship.

However, with other sides in and around the relegation zone also in equally bad form, the Magpies are confident of avoiding the drop by making some quality signings in January. Eddie Howe’s priority remains bringing in quality defenders and a good central midfielder in the window.

However, the recent injury to key forward Callum Wilson has slightly altered their plans. Howe is now considering signing a striker with a prolific record in English football. Arsenal outcast Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has emerged as a solid option over a January loan move.

Dominic Solanke is the newest name on Newcastle’s shortlist as Howe knows the player’s quality. The Englishman has been scoring goals for fun for Bournemouth, who sit on top in the Championship table.

With 18 strikes to his name, Solanke is the third-highest goalscorer in the competition, with only Ben Brereton and Aleksandar Mitrovic ahead of him. The ex-Chelsea academy ace is key to the Cherries’ hopes of returning to the Premier League and losing him midway through the campaign could seriously affect their chances.

Newcastle would be prepared to pay the necessary fees to acquire the 24-year-old, although Solanke would be wary of returning to the Championship if the Magpies go down in the summer. It remains to be seen if a move materialises, although the Tynesiders’ position in the standings could play a huge role in scuppering a transfer.

If not Solanke, the Magpies will surely try to bring another striker in the window, as they cannot afford to go into the relegation battle without a top-quality forward.
