Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are reportedly among the clubs monitoring the situation of Stefan de Vrij.
A recent report from FC Inter News has offered an update on the future of Stefan de Vrij. The 29-year-old Inter Milan defender is facing an uncertain future at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, with the Serie A club failing to offer him a new deal owing to their economic struggles of late.
It has put multiple clubs on red alert, with Barcelona, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur recently making an enquiry regarding the availability of the Dutch defender. They are all keen on snapping up de Vrij next summer, with Antonio Conte, in particular, desperate for a reunion with the former Feyenoord starlet.
Stefan de Vrij’s current contract at Inter Milan expires in 2023. Inter may consider cashing in on the 29-year-old defender next summer if their financial woes persist.
It could be welcome news for Conte, who is keen on rebuilding the Tottenham defence despite excellent results in recent weeks. The Italian mastermind is already prepared to sanction an exit for Joe Rodon, who seems destined to join Newcastle United in January.
Speaking of the Magpies, their interest in de Vrij is not surprising as the recent injection of cash has now made them one of the richest clubs in world football. While their current sporting situation eludes them from signing top players in January, they are expected to splash the cash next summer, provided they manage to stave off relegation during the second half of the campaign.
Someone like Stefan de Vrij could be an ideal man to spearhead the Newcastle defence in the club’s venture into the new era. But it remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old Dutchman himself sees the Magpies as a desirable option.
One club that should not have any problems attracting star players is Barcelona. Regardless of their sporting and financial shortcomings in recent years, the Blaugrana remain a dream club for many clubs across Europe. Stefan de Vrij could be no exception, especially if he is given the opportunity to spearhead the club’s defence in the years to come.
The Catalans have no shortage of alternatives, though, as they are also in the market for other top defenders, including Antonio Rudiger. The Chelsea defender’s contract is set to expire in the summer, essentially making him a free agent. Barcelona are involved in the race to sign Matthijs de Ligt as well, although they face stiff competition from Paris Saint-Germain.
Nevertheless, they are expected to go all out in the pursuit of de Vrij next summer. The Inter Milan star has established himself as one of the finest in Europe and may once again play a key role in helping the Nerazzurri retain the Serie A title, only to further his stock among the European giants.
