Transfer News: Newcastle face Wolves, AS Roma competition for Sven Botman

AS Roma and Wolves are ready rival Newcastle United in the race to sign LOSC Lille star Sven Botman, who is expected to cost around €24 million.

According to a report from Transfer Market Web, Wolverhampton Wanderers and AS Roma have emerged as the two latest clubs to have been linked with a move for Sven Botman. The LOSC Lille star is currently one of the hottest defensive prospects in the market, with the reigning French champions valuing him at around €24 million.

In addition to Wolves and Roma, Botman is a top target for Newcastle United. The Magpies were even considering making a formal offer for the young defender, as new manager Eddie Howe looks to shore up his defensive options.

A product of the renowned Ajax youth academy, Botman has been a revelation since his move to Lille in 2020. During his first season at the club, the Dutchman built a formidable defensive partnership with Jose Fonte, helping his club sensationally secure the Ligue 1 title from the jaws of Paris Saint-Germain.

Although Lille have been unable to replicate their excellent form in the new season, the 21-year-old has continued to be a standout performer in the team. It has compelled multiple clubs to keep an eye on the youngster, including Chelsea. The Blues are reportedly targeting the player as a potential alternative for top defensive target Jules Kounde.

Newcastle United, too, consider Botman to be an ideal fit in Howe’s bid to add more quality in the defensive unit. The Magpies haven’t had much luck in the market, but signing a quality youngster like the 21-year-old could certainly serve as a signal of intent for the other teams in the division.

Other clubs involved in the pursuit of the centre-back include Wolverhampton Wanderers. and AS Roma. Wolves are eyeing more competition for their current defensive trifecta of Conor Coady, Romain Saiss and Max Kilman. Not to mention, Willy Boly has lost his place in the side, thus accentuating the need for a new face in the defensive unit.

Sven Botman could be an ideal fit for both these Premier League outfits. However, with the Dutchman attracting interest even from the big guns like Roma or Chelsea, he is unlikely to settle for relegation strugglers Newcastle United or Wolves, with the latter even likely to struggle to put together €24 million to sign the player next month.
