Liverpool have reportedly been dealt with a major blow in the pursuit of Villarreal’s 24-year-old attacking sensation Arnaut Danjuma.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has offered a disappointing update for Liverpool fans in the club’s pursuit of Arnaut Danjuma. The Premier League giants were among the clubs in contention to sign the Villarreal forward in the upcoming January transfer window.
However, it appears the explosive forward is set to remain in Spain, with La Liga giants Villarreal having no intention of offloading the 24-year-old attacker just a few months after signing him in the summer.
The reigning Europa League champions had indeed spent the big bucks on the former Bournemouth winger in August. Danjuma was coming on the back of an excellent spell with the Cherries that saw him score 17 goals in 52 competitive appearances, with 15 of his strikes coming in the 2020/21 Championship campaign.
Four months into his spell in La Liga, the Dutchman has turned out to be a massive bargain for Villarreal. In 12 league appearances, the forward has netted five goals while providing two assists. But his big breakthrough came in the Champions League, with the player’s four goals and one assist helping his club secure a berth in the Round of 16.
Danjuma’s performances at the highest level of football have made him a top target for a number of clubs across Europe, including Chelsea. The Blues are indeed keen on bringing the attacker back to England, though they are certainly not the only club involved in the pursuit.
Liverpool, in particular, have been the standout team in the race to sign Danjuma in January. The 24-year-old Dutchman is highly rated by Jurgen Klopp, who is keen on reinforcing his options in the offensive department in light of the upcoming AFCON that will leave Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane out of contention for a chunk of early 2022.
However, with Villarreal having no intention of cashing in on their prized attacker, it might be time for Liverpool to set their sights on other alternatives. They certainly have no shortage of options, with the club recently being in contention to re-sign Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona.
The Merseyside giants are also considering a move for Real Madrid’s attacking sensation Rodrygo Goes. However, Liverpool may similarly have to wait until summer before making an attempt to sign the Brazilian.
