Transfer News: Sevilla set to face defeat in Steven Bergwijn pursuit

Tottenham Hotspur will not sell 24-year-old Dutch forward Steven Bergwijn in January despite interest from European giants Sevilla and Ajax.

According to a report by Spanish publication MARCA, Steven Bergwijn appears set to stay put at Tottenham Hotspur beyond the January transfer window. European giants Sevilla and Ajax have been courting the 24-year-old forward.

Steven Bergwijn joined Tottenham from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 and made an immediate impact at the club. However, after a strong end to the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, the Dutchman has been on a constant downward spiral at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And he has had to share game-time with Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura, Gareth Bale and Bryan Gil in the last 18 months.

This season, the same has been the case, as the 24-year-old has started only seven of the 26 games played by Tottenham thus far, amassing one goal and two assists in the process. However, despite being pushed down the pecking order at the north London club, Bergwijn’s stock remains high, with Sevilla keen on signing him in the January transfer window.

The interest from Sevilla is understandable, considering Erik Lamela is a long-term absentee. The former Tottenham forward is unavailable until March after recently sustaining a shoulder injury. In addition, Suso is also sidelined with an ankle complaint, with the Spaniard only likely to return in April.

With two key wide-attackers unavailable, it is evident that Sevilla can do with a new forward, especially with their European adventure set to continue with the rigours of the UEFA Europa League in February. In addition to the Andalusian club, Bergwijn is also a target for another European giant in Ajax.

However, Tottenham will not sanction Bergwijn’s sale, with Antonio Conte impressed by the 24-year-old’s performance in the Carabao Cup quarter-final win over West Ham United. And in the aftermath of the performance, Conte heaped praise on the Dutchman, saying, “Now Steven is a player totally involved into what I want, into what I ask from my players.”

With Bergwijn unlikely to leave Spurs, Sevilla will need to turn their attention elsewhere to bolster their wide-attacking slots. The La Liga giants have their sights set on another Tottenham forward in Bryan Gil, who previously played for the club, and it remains to be seen if the young Spaniard rejoins them in January.
