Barcelona and Real Madrid reportedly face stiff competition from Bayern Munich in the race to sign River Plate striker Julian Alvarez.
According to a report by AS Argentina, Julian Alvarez continues to emerge on the radars of some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Inter Milan are already courting the River Plate striker, with Bayern Munich the latest club to show an interest in him.
Julian Alvarez has become one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe on the back of a fantastic 2021 season, culminating with River Plate winning the Argentine Primera Division. The 21-year-old ended the campaign with 24 goals and 15 assists in 46 outings across all competitions.
At the same time, Alvarez has also broken into the Argentine national side, turning out five times for La Albiceleste. The youngster’s tremendous progress has not gone unnoticed, as he has popped up on the radars of some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
The interest from Barcelona is understandable, considering Sergio Aguero has decided to hang up his boots after being diagnosed with a heart condition. Aguero’s forced retirement has left Xavi Hernandez bereft of a quality striker to spearhead his team’s attacking unit.
As a result, Barcelona must sign a striker who can be a long-term solution at the tip of their attack, making Alvarez a viable target. On the other hand, Karim Benzema’s advancing years could explain Real Madrid’s eagerness to sign Alvarez. While the Frenchman has been on a hot streak for over three years, the fact that he is 34 years old must not be lost on Florentino Perez.
To that end, Alvarez is viewed as a possible successor for Benzema, although Real Madrid’s preference might be to sign Erling Haaland. The latest club to be linked with the 21-year-old is Bayern Munich. Like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich should lay down a succession plan for Robert Lewandowski, who is approaching the twilight of his career.
Interestingly, Lewandowski is one of the strikers on Real Madrid’s radar, meaning Bayern Munich must be on the lookout for a young striker, making Alvarez an option worth considering. In addition to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern, AC Milan and Inter Milan are also keen on signing the 21-year-old. So, it remains to be seen where the Argentine ends up as his River Plate spell draws to a close.
