Corentin Tolisso is reportedly weighing up the prospect of joining Barcelona instead of Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Corentin Tolisso seemed to be set to join Real Madrid on a Bosman move in next summer’s transfer window. However, the Bayern Munich midfielder is now eager to listen to Barcelona’s offer before taking a final call on his future.
Corentin Tolisso joined Bayern Munich from Lyon in July 2017 and has since endured a difficult spell at the Allianz Arena. While the 27-year-old made a strong start to his stint with the Bavarian giants, his stock has declined in the last few years. A spate of injuries has also blighted his efforts to become a regular for Die Roten.
To date, the French international has turned out 109 times for Bayern Munich, chipping in with 19 goals and 15 assists along the way. And Tolisso’s stint with the Bundesliga champions is set to end next summer when his contract with the club runs out. Such a situation has alerted Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The interest from Barcelona makes sense, as Frenkie de Jong’s future at the club is uncertain amid their financial woes. The Dutch international is viewed as the best solution to raising bundles of funds with one sale, which is why a summer sale is reportedly being considered.
In addition, with Gavi, Nico Gonzalez and Pedri still in their teens, they must be given time to develop instead of being played every game. So, it behoves Barcelona to invest in a central midfielder, making Tolisso a viable target. However, the Catalan giants face stiff competition from Real Madrid.
At Real Madrid, Tolisso could directly replace Dani Ceballos and Isco, with the Spanish midfielders set to leave the club either in January or next summer. And with Luka Modric in the twilight of his career, an additional option in the French international will keep Los Blancos in good stead. Recent reports had claimed that Tolisso is keen on joining Real Madrid.
However, according to El Nacional, Tolisso’s move to Real Madrid might not be set in stone, as he also wishes to listen to Barcelona’s proposal before taking a final call on his future. The Merengues remain cautiously optimistic about signing the 27-year-old. However, the latest development does put them in a spot of bother, and it remains to be seen where he ends up next summer.
