Transfer News: Newcastle join Barcelona in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang chase

Newcastle United have reportedly joined Barcelona in the race to sign Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after his recent fallout with Mikel Arteta.

According to a report from Fichajes, Newcastle United have entered the race for the signing of Arsenal striker and former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is also a target for Barcelona.

The 32-year-old has had a major falling out with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta after his latest disciplinary breach, which saw the club strip the captaincy duties off him, with the manager completely axing the striker for three games in a row now. It has led to speculations over his future at the Emirates Stadium, more so given that his contract has only 18 months left for expiry.

Clubs across Europe have taken note of the developing situation at Arsenal, and some teams are showing serious interest in signing Aubameyang. Barcelona are one among the clubs that are keen on landing the 32-year-old as they continue their search for a new centre-forward ahead of the January window.

The Catalans saw Sergio Aguero retire earlier this summer due to a heart condition, while Martin Braithwaite and Memphis Depay have been bogged down by injury issues of late. With Luuk de Jong not in favour under Xavi Hernandez, the Blaugrana need a new goalscorer in January, leading to strong links to Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani.

However, Aubameyang’s situation at Arsenal has meant that they are also considering a move for the Gabonese international, who is said to be open to a switch to Camp Nou. But, Barça will now need to face competition from cash-rich Premier League outfit Newcastle United, who are also keen on landing the 32-year-old striker.

Currently dawdling at the wrong end of the table, the Magpies are in desperate need of quality additions who can inspire a turnaround of fortunes and lead them away from the drop zone. With goals not coming freely at the top, adding a proven striker like Aubameyang would certainly appeal to Eddie Howe & co.

They have the cash to offer Aubameyang a hefty contract and meet Arsenal’s transfer fee demands. However, convincing the ex-Arsenal striker to move to a club where relegation is a strong possibility would be a huge task. Apart from Barcelona and Newcastle, faltering Serie A giants Juventus are also keen on signing him.

It now remains to be seen if Aubameyang stays put in north London and wins his place back or decides to move on in January, with no shortage of suitors for his services.
