Transfer News: Tottenham star Davinson Sanchez on Napoli radar

Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez has emerged as a January target for Serie A giants Napoli.

According to Calcio In Pillole, Napoli have registered interest in Davinson Sanchez. The Tottenham Hotspur star has emerged as one of many talented centre-backs the club is targeting in January as they prepare for life without Kostas Manolas.

The Greek defender has agreed to return to Olympiacos next month, thus ending a two and a half year-long spell at Napoli. His absence is set to create a massive void in the defensive unit, leaving coach Luciano Spalletti devoid of a reliable alternative for Kalidou Koulibaly and Amir Rrahmani.

It has accentuated the need for a new centre-back, which is why the Partenopei are now targeting Sanchez. The club has also been linked with a move for Gleison Bremer, but the Brazilian is courted by a slew of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, who are reportedly leading the chase to sign the player in January.

As a result, Napoli have set their sights on Sanchez. The Colombian international has largely endured a disappointing spell in England, struggling to fulfil his potential despite having no real issues with game-time. The defender has simply failed to offer consistent performances since his move from AFC Ajax back in 2017.

Sanchez’s importance in the first-team has already dissipated over the past 12 months, with the centre-back starting in only six Premier League matches so far. His chances of remaining a vital cog in the backline are close to none, especially with Ben Davies enjoying an excellent breakthrough under Antonio Conte while Cristian Romero is nearing full fitness.

More importantly, the Lilywhites are also looking for options in the market. They are among the clubs in contention to sign Chelsea’s contract rebel, Antonio Rudiger. In addition to the German, Marcos Senesi has emerged as a potential target, so it won’t be surprising to see Spurs offloading Sanchez in January.

With 162 competitive appearances for the club, the Colombian international offers considerable experience at the highest level of football. He is also likely to fit better in Serie A’s more tactical and defence-oriented football, potentially making him an ideal target for Napoli. However, it remains to be seen whether the club can afford Sanchez’s reported asking fee of €30 million next month.
