Barcelona are reportedly ready to make their contract offer to sign Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani on an 18-month deal in January.
According to reputed journalist Gerard Romero, Barcelona are stepping up their efforts to secure the services of Edinson Cavani in the January transfer window. The Catalan giants have prepared a contract offer to sign the Manchester United striker on an 18-month deal.
Edinson Cavani has proven to be a valuable addition to the Manchester United squad since joining the club as a deadline day arrival in the summer transfer window of 2020. Initially branded as a panic buy, the Uruguayan striker made several notable contributions in the 2020/21 season.
However, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo this past summer, coupled with fitness issues, have restricted Cavani’s game-time considerably. As a result, the 34-year-old has raked in just 274 minutes of action over six appearances, scoring only one goal in the process. Such a situation has captured the attention of some of the biggest clubs in the world, including Barcelona.
The interest from Barcelona is understandable, considering Sergio Aguero has called time on his career due to the effects of a heart ailment. The Argentine’s retirement leaves Xavi Hernandez with Martin Braithwaite and Luuk de Jong as the only out-and-out strikers at his disposal.
With Braithwaite a backup option at best and de Jong already deemed surplus to requirements less than half a year since arriving on loan from Sevilla, Barcelona’s need to sign a striker has been accentuated. To that end, Cavani is a viable target for the Blaugrana, with talks reportedly already underway over a January move.
According to recent reports, the Catalan giants are prioritising a winter transfer for the Manchester United striker. And now, as per Gerard Romero, Cavani is set to be tabled a contract offer by Barcelona. Barcelona will offer the Uruguayan international an 18-month deal that will entail him to be paid €3.5 million until June and €4 million the following year, in addition to variable payments.
Barcelona would fancy their chances of snapping up the 34-year-old as he is keen on joining the club. What now remains to be seen is if Cavani is prepared to accept the contract offer that the La Liga heavyweights are set to propose, as his stint with Manchester United nears its end.
