Transfer News: PSG table offer for Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona have reportedly been offered the prospect of a part-exchange deal for Frenkie de Jong by PSG, with Neymar included as a sweetener.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Frenkie de Jong is a key target for Paris Saint-Germain. The French giants are prepared to offer a part-exchange deal to prise the Dutch midfielder away from Barcelona, with Neymar added as a makeweight to see the agreement through.

Frenkie de Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019 and has since continued his upward trajectory. In the two and a half years he has spent with Barcelona, the 24-year-old has bolstered his status as one of the best young midfielders in Europe.

To date, de Jong has made 112 appearances for Barcelona, chipping in with ten goals and 14 assists in the process. However, the Dutch international is facing an uncertain future at Barcelona, as is the case with every other player. With the Blaugrana intent on undergoing a major squad overhaul, there is a good chance that de Jong could leave the club. Such a situation has alerted PSG.

The interest from PSG is understandable, considering Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye are on the wrong side of 30. In addition, Marco Verratti has been beset by several injuries in recent years, while Julian Draxler’s frustrating stint with the club could end in one of the two upcoming transfer windows.

With Georginio Wijnaldum struggling to recreate his heroics from his Liverpool days and Danilo Pereira blowing hot and cold, it is clear why PSG would want to sign a midfielder. To that end, de Jong is a viable target for the Ligue 1 heavyweights, who are now ready to launch the offensive for Barcelona’s key midfielder despite his father insisting he will not be departing Camp Nou.

According to El Nacional, the French giants are offering a part-exchange deal to Barcelona, which will include a €50 million cash payment in addition to a sweetener in Neymar. However, the La Liga heavyweights are not interested in such a deal, as they do not want to re-sign Neymar.

While the Brazilian will arguably be an upgrade on every Barcelona attacker, the Blaugrana cannot afford his astronomical wages. So, while de Jong is deemed transferable, Barcelona will only part with their key midfielder if PSG can table a €90 million cash offer. Otherwise, the Dutchman will be staying put at Camp Nou.
