Transfer News: Newcastle United interested in Wout Weghorst

Premier League outfit Newcastle United have expressed the desire to sign VfL Wolfsburg forward Wout Weghorst.

According to a report from Kicker, Wout Weghorst is among the players facing an uncertain future at Wolfsburg. The club is set for a mid-season makeover after a disappointing start to the season. They are already expected to offload Josip Brekalo on a permanent deal, while the contracts of Admir Mehmedi, William and Daniel Ginzczek will not be extended.

Another player whose future remains unresolved is Weghorst. The star striker has apparently received offers soon after changing his consulting agency, with Newcastle among his suitors. The report states that the Dutchman is unlikely to remain at Wolfsburg beyond the summer of 2022, making the Magpies a major favourite in any potential transfer chase.

Formerly of AZ Alkmaar, Weghorst is highly regarded as one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga due to his resounding success at Wolfsburg over the past few years. The tall forward had notably started his career in Germany with 17 goals in his debut campaign, which was followed by 16 more in the following season.

The Dutchman’s most successful season came during the 2020/21 campaign when he was the focal point of Oliver Glasner’s attacking setup. The 29-year-old netted 20 goals, firing Wolfsburg into the Champions League places.

However, since the departure of Glasner, Weghorst has had difficulties scoring goals. The forward has netted only five times in 13 league matches this term, and his importance in the team has deteriorated after the summer arrivals of players like Dodi Lukebakio, Luca Waldschmidt, Lukas Nmecha and Maximilian Philipp, whose loan move from Spartak was made permanent.

As such, the former Willem II forward could soon be on his way out of the Volkswagen Arena, perhaps even after the end of the season. It could be welcome news for Newcastle United, who are aiming to attract star players that can help them become one of the best clubs in world football.

In the meantime, though, the Magpies are in a precarious position. With just ten points in 16 matches, the Magpies are running the risk of being relegated at the end of the season, which could pause their project at least for another year. Hence, the club may require reinforcements much sooner in the upcoming January transfer window.

While Weghorst likely won’t be an option in the winter, Newcastle certainly have no shortage of alternatives. They are already among the clubs in contention to sign Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, while Eddie Howe is also targeting a move for Darwin Nunez, although the latter remains unrealistic for now.
