Alexis Sanchez could reportedly be on his way out of Inter Milan in the January transfer window, with Barcelona pondering a possible move.
According to the print edition of Corriere della Sera, as relayed by Sempre Inter, Alexis Sanchez is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in the January transfer window. The 32-year-old could leave Serie A giants Inter Milan this winter due to his frustrations over a lack of game-time.
Alexis Sanchez has endured a hit-and-miss spell since joining Inter Milan from Manchester United. Initially signed on a loan deal for the 2019/20 season, the Chilean forward joined the Nerazzurri permanently in September 2020. However, he has only shown flashes of his brilliance while being a backup option for the Serie A champions.
Things have gone from bad to worse for the 32-year-old this season, as summer signings Joaquin Correa and Edin Dzeko have usurped him in the pecking order. As a result, Sanchez has managed only 378 minutes of game-time, amassing two goals and three assists in 14 appearances thus far. The player’s frustrations have boiled over, and he could seek a move away from San Siro in January, with Barcelona showing an interest in him.
Sanchez previously spent three years at Barcelona, with his stint at Camp Nou being one of the better phases of his career. After leaving Barcelona, Sanchez had joined Arsenal, where he played the best football of his life. As for the interest from the Blaugrana, it does make some sense, despite the evident decline in the veteran’s playing levels.
Memphis Depay has blown hot and cold following a strong start to life as a Barcelona player. In addition, the Dutchman is sidelined with a hamstring injury, leaving Xavi Hernandez bereft of his three best attacking players, the others being Ansu Fati and Sergio Aguero.
With Martin Braithwaite a backup option at best and Luuk de Jong being deemed surplus to requirements, it behoves Barcelona to bolster their attacking unit in the January transfer window. To that end, several players have been linked with the club, with Cristhian Stuani the latest to pop up on their radar.
However, Sanchez could be a solid addition to the first-team squad, considering he can play as a striker and a wide-attacker. While question marks loom over his form, he remains a viable target. As for Inter Milan, the priority option to replace Sanchez would be Giacomo Raspadori, and it remains to be seen if both the transfers see the light of the day.
