Manchester United are prepared to compete with Liverpool for Porto wide man Luis Diaz as a move away for the Colombian seems imminent.
According to Fichajes, Manchester United have entered the race for Luis Diaz and will have to battle it out with several clubs vying for the attacker’s signature.
Luis Diaz is one of European football’s most improved players. His performances at Porto have been tremendous this season, yielding 13 goals and three assists across all competitions. Those stats have come from a more attacking wide position on the left side or as part of the attacking trio upfront.
The Colombian usually occupies a wide left role in a compact 4-4-2, while he has also been deployed in the front three in case of a 4-3-3. He was attracting interest from Premier League sides during the summer window, although Porto’s huge asking price prevented suitors from making an offer.
However, Porto’s elimination from the Champions League this term might prompt the Portuguese side to accept a sizeable offer in January. There is a confidence that one of the top clubs might look to sign the attacker, as a battle seems to be brewing in the background for the Colombian’s signature.
Manchester City have reportedly enquired about the Colombian in recent weeks, although it seems Liverpool have been leading the case. The Merseyside scouts have had the opportunity to view the player first hand during the club’s clashes with Porto this season in the Champions League, with Diaz’s numbers hugely impressing those in charge of the Premier League side.
However, Manchester United have entered the chase, as Ralf Rangnick eyes important signings in January. The Colombian’s attacking style and ability to cover the wide left side position may be why the Red Devils want him, with the club lacking an attacker of Diaz’s ilk in their squad.
Manchester United have problems on the left flank this season. Marcus Rashford’s dwindling form and Anthony Martial’s perpetual absence leaves space for the addition of another player, to give the side a different dimension. Furthermore, the Frenchman could depart the club in January to seek regular game time.
Diaz will certainly not come cheap, as Porto could demand a sizeable transfer fee. They may yet cut down on their summer asking price, which was reported to be around €80 million, although it will still be big. So, it remains to be seen which club wins the battle for his signature.
