Transfer News: Corinthians join race to sign Manchester United star Edinson Cavani

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Brazilian outfit Corinthians, who have opened talks with his camp.

According to a report from GE Globo in Brazil, Corinthians are strongly interested in signing Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani and have approached his representatives over a potential deal for the veteran.

Cavani joined Manchester United in the summer of last year, arriving on a free transfer after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain had run out. The 34-year-old enjoyed a solid debut campaign in England as he finished with a tally of 17 goals and six assists from 39 matches in all competitions, helping the club to a second-place finish in the Premier League and the finals of the UEFA Europa League.

Manchester United extended his contract by another year in the summer, but Cavani has seen his status reduce in the light of Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival. This term, the Uruguayan international has featured just five times in the Premier League and has just one goal to show for. With his game-time taking a hit, Cavani could be open to a move away in the January transfer window.

The former Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain superstar has been linked with a move to Barcelona, while there has been significant interest from Italian heavyweights Juventus. And now, another club have joined the queue for the signing of the veteran forward in the form of Corinthians.

The Brazilian giants are on the lookout for a striker to bolster their attacking unit. Having managed to sign a player from the Premier League this past summer, when they brought in Willian from Arsenal, they are hoping to repeat the trick with Cavani.

To that end, it is claimed that Corinthians have established contact with the striker’s brother, Walter Guglielmone, who also happens to be his manager, to explore the possibility of a transfer. He has admitted to there being a possibility of a move to Brazil should an offer come along as it would allow him to be close to home in Uruguay.

There has also been some interest from another Brazilian outfit, Palmeiras. So, it will certainly be interesting to see if Cavani ends up securing a move back to South America in the upcoming transfer window or decides to see out his contract at Manchester United until the end of the season.
