Barcelona’s wantaway goalkeeper Neto is reportedly exploring the possibility of joining Everton in the January transfer window.
A recent report from Sport has offered a detailed update on Barcelona’s cleanup policy in the upcoming January transfer window. Many players are expected to leave the club next month, with Neto, in particular, keen on ending his misery at Camp Nou.
Already deemed surplus to requirements by new coach Xavi, the former Juventus ‘keeper is keeping a close eye on Everton’s goalkeeping situation, and it appears a potential move to Goodison Park could be on the horizon.
A member of Barcelona since 2019, Neto is unhappy with the club management due to his lack of game-time over the last two and a half years. After being brought in as a direct replacement for Jasper Cillessen, the Brazilian has featured in only 19 competitive appearances for the club, falling behind Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the pecking order.
The former Valencia shot-stopper has been often overlooked even when ter Stegen performed badly. As a result, he is prepared to take the next step in his career, with AS Roma, Inter and Lazio all emerging as potential destinations. He has admirers in England as well, in the form of West Ham.
However, it seems Neto is fancying a potential move to West Ham’s league rivals, Everton. The report suggests he is keeping a close eye on the goalkeeping situation at Goodison Park, especially after reports that suggested that the Toffees are willing to part ways with Tottenham target Jordan Pickford. It could open up a vacancy in goal, and that is where the Brazilian could come into the fray.
With 101 appearances for Fiorentina and 80 appearances for Valencia, Neto brings a wealth of experience at the highest level of football. He is also a two-time Italian champion and can bring the winning mentality that could be crucial in helping Everton get back on track after a disastrous start to the campaign.
Barcelona themselves won’t be fazed by the departure of Neto. In fact, the Catalans are already planning ahead in search of a replacement for the 32-year-old. Levante shot-stopper Aitor Fernandez has already emerged as a potential option while Barcelona may also enter the market for former academy starlet Andre Onana, who is available in the upcoming January transfer window.
