Barcelona are reportedly considering 30-year-old Levante goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez as a possible replacement for Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Aitor Fernandez is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a move in next summer’s transfer window. The 30-year-old Levante goalkeeper is viewed as a possible replacement for Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Aitor Fernandez has established himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in La Liga since joining Levante from CD Numancia in July 2018. In the last three years, the Spaniard has been a solid customer between the sticks for the Granotes, although he has had to share game-time with Dani Cardenas this season.
To date, the 30-year-old has made 98 appearances for Levante, keeping only 13 clean sheets in the process. The Spanish goalkeeper’s progress at the Valencian club has not gone unnoticed, with his exploits being noticed by one of the biggest clubs in Europe in Barcelona.
The Catalan giants have been linked with Fernandez previously, with the continued interest in him stemming from Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s uncertain future. In addition, Neto is likely to depart Camp Nou next summer, searching for regular game-time. At the same time, Inaki Pena will likely seek a loan move to earn valuable experience in senior football.
As for ter Stegen, the German goalkeeper has question marks popping around his Barcelona future, with the Blaugrana prepared to listen to offers for him. To that end, Aitor Fernandez is a viable target for Barcelona. However, considering he is only 30 years old, the Spaniard will only be a short-term solution for them.
Barcelona’s priority target is Andre Onana, but the Cameroonian goalkeeper’s likely destination is touted to be Inter Milan. As a result, the Catalan giants have turned their attention towards Aitor Fernandez, although the Spanish goalkeeper is unlikely to be a popular signing for them.
However, amid their financial struggles, Barcelona’s hand could be forced, which is perhaps why a move for Aitor Fernandez is being mooted. So, it remains to be seen if the 30-year-old Spanish goalkeeper makes his way to Camp Nou next summer or if the Blaugrana’s sights are set elsewhere.
