Transfer News: Serge Gnabry on Barcelona radar

Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing 26-year-old German forward Serge Gnabry from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Serge Gnabry is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in next summer’s transfer window. The 26-year-old forward is considering the prospect of leaving Bayern Munich in search of a new challenge.

Serge Gnabry joined Bayern Munich from Werder Bremen in July 2017, but it was only after a one-year loan spell with Hoffenheim that he earned his breakthrough with the Bundesliga giants. Now a key figure for club and country, the German international has gone from strength to strength in the last three years.

To date, the 26-year-old has made 147 appearances for Bayern, amassing 55 goals and 34 assists in the process. However, the German champions are in a precarious position over the player’s long-term future as he will enter the final 18 months of his contract at the turn of the year. Such a situation has piqued the interest of Barcelona.

The Catalan giants have been heavily linked with several attackers in recent weeks in light of their struggles in the final third this season. Barcelona’s attacking failures have also contributed to their ouster from the UEFA Champions League while also pegging them back in the top-four race in La Liga.

With Memphis Depay tailing off after a strong start to his Barcelona career and heavily linked with a possible departure from the club next summer, Gnabry is a viable target. In fact, the German international could be a major upgrade on Depay due to his ability to change a game on his own.

An all-round player like Gnabry would add a lot of goals and creativity to Barcelona’s game, especially after they were rebuffed by Chelsea in pursuit of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. However, Barcelona could face stiff competition from several other clubs in the race to sign the 26-year-old if he is ready to be offloaded by Bayern Munich.

For now, Gnabry has emerged as an attractive target for Barcelona, and it remains to be seen if he makes his way to Camp Nou in the next summer’s transfer window. However, the Blaugrana’s financial struggles could restrict them in their bid to prise him away from the Bundesliga champions.
