Transfer News: Newcastle United interested in Arthur Melo

Juventus midfielder Arthur could be a target for Newcastle United in the January window, as the Magpies seek solutions from the market to avoid relegation.

According to El Nacional, Newcastle United are interested in signing Arthur Melo from Juventus in January, as they actively seek solutions from the transfer market to avoid relegation.

Arthur Melo has endured a tough period at Juventus since his controversial move from Barcelona in 2020. Once considered a future star at the Catalan side, the 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder has never come close to emulating it in Turin.

Juventus paid a premium price for him but could not unlock his potential. From the look of it, the big move seems to have weighed over the midfielder, who has barely made it into starting elevens. He was never preferred by former manager Andrea Pirlo and has not featured much under new boss Massimiliano Allegri. Arthur’s future at Juventus looks bleak, with the Italian side keen to cut their losses.

Newcastle United are one of the few sides reportedly interested in signing the 25-year-old midfielder. The wealthy Magpies ownership are prepared to spend big if necessary and entice the Brazilian by offering big wages. The Tyneside outfit is eyeing several signings to improve their squad in the short term to improve immediate results.

Eddie Howe wants Newcastle to focus on bringing in defenders and midfielders as priority targets. They are also on the hunt for Arthur’s teammate Aaron Ramsey, although there are doubts over the Welshman’s arrival. The big problem for Newcastle is their league position, as none of those targetted players would want to endure a relegation battle.

Similarly, they are also interested in re-signing Georginio Wijnaldum from PSG and prepared to offer big wages to the Dutchman to make a move back to the Premier League.

Another player from the Juventus squad, Adrien Rabiot, is of interest to Newcastle. However, the Frenchman is understandably preferred by Allegri, who sees him as important to his plans this season. Hence, the Magpies might consider a high profile move for Arthur, who might be inclined to move to the Premier League.

Newcastle have a sizable budget for the January window and could certainly make quality signings. They are desperate to avoid relegation at the end of the season and are prepared to spend big in the market to improve their results in the second half of the season.
