Barcelona have reportedly rebuffed the chance to sign 31-year-old Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from Ligue 1 giants PSG.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Georginio Wijnaldum is getting increasingly disillusioned at Paris Saint-Germain and is eager to leave the Ligue 1 giants in the January transfer window. The Dutch midfielder has been offered to Barcelona, who have no intention of taking up the chance to sign him.
Georginio Wijnaldum joined Paris Saint-Germain on a Bosman move this past summer, having run down his contract with Liverpool at the end of the 2020/21 season. However, the transfer has not panned out as envisioned for the 31-year-old, who has struggled to impress this season.
While the Dutch international has made 20 appearances for the Ligue 1 heavyweights, he has failed to perform consistently. And with his place in the PSG midfield not set in stone, Wijnaldum is becoming disillusioned at PSG and is considering a January move away from Parc des Princes. To that end, he has been offered to Barcelona.
Interestingly, the Catalan giants were heavily linked with a Bosman move for Wijnaldum in the summer transfer window, but a transfer failed to materialise. However, Barcelona did not sign another midfielder, despite being unable to land the PSG midfielder and choosing not to replace Ilaix Moriba and Miralem Pjanic.
With Xavi being short of quality midfield options despite the advent of Gavi and Nico Gonzalez, the La Liga heavyweights are eager to sign a midfielder in the January transfer window. To that end, several midfielders, including Renato Sanches, have been linked with Barcelona.
Wijnaldum could have also been a viable target for Barcelona, but they are unwilling to take up the offer to snap up the 31-year-old. Instead, a move to Newcastle United appears to be the best way out of PSG for the Dutch international, who is eager to leave the Ligue 1 giants in the January transfer window.
The Magpies are eager to make their former midfield general the central figure of their sporting project, which could attract him, despite their relegation battle this season. So, it remains to be seen if Wijnaldum returns to Newcastle United in January after being turned down by Barcelona.
