Newcastle United are reportedly in contention of re-signing wantaway Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

As reported by Spanish publication AS, has offered an update on Georginio Wijnaldum. It appears the former Liverpool midfielder is not happy at Paris Saint-Germain and is looking to leave the club in the upcoming January transfer window. He could fancy a return to England as well, with Newcastle United among the clubs interested in his services.

Wijnaldum has endured a difficult start to his career at PSG. He was brought in from Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer. The Dutchman was also linked with Barcelona at the time, but his decision to join the Parisian camp seemed like an excellent move, as the club also secured the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Lionel Messi, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Sergio Ramos in the same window.

But almost halfway into the new season, Wijnaldum has struggled to prove himself in Ligue 1. He has failed to thrive amid so much competition in midfield, resulting in only seven starts in the league so far. PSG are already said to be looking for potential replacements, having been linked with a move for Casemiro and Marcelo Brozovic, among many others.

The Dutchman’s fall from grace at PSG, though, could open up an excellent opportunity for Newcastle United to re-sign the midfielder in January. The player had spent a season at St. James’ Park back in the 2015/16 campaign, featuring in 40 competitive matches, before eventually joining Liverpool in 2016.

It is apparent that Premier League clubs rate Wijnaldum highly due to his successful spell at Anfield. During his five years at Liverpool, the midfielder bagged almost everything, including the fabled Premier League title for Liverpool, as well as the UEFA Champions League. He was one of the club’s most important protagonists during their rise to prominence under Jurgen Klopp.

Therefore, Wijnaldum’s reported desire to return to England is hardly surprising, as he looks to get his career back on track. And a potential return to Newcastle United could make a lot of sense, as the Magpies can offer him not only a lucrative salary but also an opportunity to become the central figure of the club’s rebuild next season.

Newcastle United have been linked with other midfield like Adrien Rabiot this season. But in Wijnaldum, they could find themselves an ex-player who has proven himself in the Premier League in the past and has what it takes to become a leader at St. James’ Park in the coming years.
