Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly among the clubs keen on signing Karim Benzema from Real Madrid next summer.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Karim Benzema is the subject of interest from Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain over a move in next summer’s transfer window. The French striker might be open to the idea of leaving Real Madrid if Erling Haaland joins the club in 2022.
Karim Benzema has established himself as one of the best strikers of his generation since joining Real Madrid from Lyon in July 2009. However, it is particularly since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the club in 2018 that the Frenchman has established himself as a talisman for Los Blancos.
2021/22 is proving to be his best season to date, with the 33-year-old raking in 17 goals and eight assists in 19 appearances across all competitions. However, despite going from strength at Real Madrid in the last few years, Benzema could be on his way out of the club due to their interest in Erling Haaland. And he has no shortage of interest, with Liverpool among prospective suitors.
The interest from Liverpool is interesting, considering Diogo Jota has filled in superbly for Roberto Firmino whenever the Brazilian has been unavailable. In addition, if Benzema is signed, he will only be a short-term solution for the Reds, which is not necessarily required, as Firmino is 30 and theoretically has several years left ahead of him.
Nevertheless, if signed, Benzema could be a solid asset for Liverpool, seeing as he is playing the best football of his career. Apart from the Real Madrid striker, the Reds have been linked with several other strikers, including Sebastien Haller. On the other hand, PSG’s eagerness to sign the veteran striker is understandable.
With Kylian Mbappe heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, PSG must enter the market for a replacement, thereby explaining the interest in Benzema. However, the Spanish giants have no interest in dealing with Les Parisiens following Mbappe’s transfer saga in the summer transfer window.
Such a development leaves Liverpool in pole position to sign Benzema, who could seek a move away from Real Madrid if Haaland is signed next summer. So, it remains to be seen if Liverpool can prise Benzema away from Real Madrid in 2022 or if he stays put at the Santiago Bernabeu instead.
