Real Madrid have reportedly pulled the plug on their pursuit of Manchester United contract rebel Paul Pogba.
According to a report by Spanish publication MARCA, Paul Pogba’s hopes of fulfilling his dream of joining Real Madrid have been handed a major blow. That is because the Spanish giants have called off their pursuit of the Manchester United contract rebel.
Pogba has been quite an enigma since returning to Manchester United from Juventus in August 2016. Five years on, the Frenchman is yet to establish himself as an indispensable figure for the Red Devils, even though he is by far the most talented player in the squad. That is because he has blown hot and cold at an alarming rate at Manchester United.
That also holds for the ongoing season, with Pogba kicking off the campaign in a strong fashion by providing assists for fun. While he still has a solid record of seven assists in 13 appearances in all competitions, his form in September and October plummetted horribly, which coincided with Manchester United’s freefall.
In addition, the Premier League heavyweights are in a precarious position over the long-term future of the 28-year-old, who is in the final year of his contract. And while initial reports claimed that Pogba was ready to extend his stay at Manchester United, those suggestions have been put to rest in recent weeks, with Real Madrid emerging as one of his prospective suitors.
The Spanish giants hold a long-standing interest in Pogba, having been hot on his trail before he rejoined Manchester United in 2016. The eagerness to sign him had seemingly only grown stronger in the past half a decade, with recent reports even claiming that Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola was pushing him to join Real Madrid.
The Merengues are reported to be in the market for a long-term successor for Luka Modric, and Pogba might fit the bill perfectly to that end. However, MARCA claims that Real Madrid would rather invest in other areas of the squad and have, therefore, decided to end their interest in Pogba.
Such a development has come as a huge blow to Pogba, who dreams of playing for Real Madrid. Instead, a move to either Paris Saint-Germain or Juventus could be on the horizon for the Manchester United contract rebel, with PSG recently stepping up their interest in him.
