Liverpool might not be interested anymore in a move for Marco Asensio as Jurgen Klopp reportedly has reservations about the Spaniard.
According to El Nacional, Liverpool may drop out of the race for Marco Asensio, leaving the path open to other interested clubs, including Arsenal. Jurgen Klopp holds reservations about the player who has been troubled by injuries in the last few years.
Marco Asensio never reached the heights he was expected to after a blistering start to his career at Real Madrid. As part of the famous Champions League-winning teams in 2016 and 2017, the Spaniard’s stock has fallen considerably in the following years.
Real Madrid, during this period, have evaded all sorts of interesting offers from clubs across Europe and especially from the Premier League. Asensio was once top of every big club’s desired transfer wishlist, and his recent downfall is monumental considering he is still 25.
As the Spaniard was on the right road of development, injuries started making their presence felt. Asensio has since been blighted by many problems, which has caused him to slow down and halt his progress altogether. He may be coming back to form under Carlo Ancelotti, who, despite being willing to give him a chance, is open to letting him leave.
Liverpool have been mentioned quite a few times over the years as a potential destination for Asensio. Reports suggest Florentino Perez may have rejected a few offers from Jurgen Klopp’s side in recent times. However, the Real Madrid president might now be open to letting him leave if a sizeable request comes along.
Liverpool were reportedly still in the race along with Arsenal and others, although the report suggests the Reds might bow out altogether. Klopp supposedly feels Asensio may not be at the level of his old self and hence falls below what is expected at Merseyside.
Hence, the pathway might be clear for other clubs, with recent stories suggesting that Asensio might be open to switching with Arsenal. The Gunners were looking at him in the summer along with Martin Odegaard before signing the Norwegian playmaker.
Arsenal might go back to Real Madrid and make a fair offer, which might be up for consideration by Perez, who is resigned to losing him at some stage. Asensio has a contract until 2023, and owing to the lack of regular game time, he might look for a way out.
Newcastle United are also in the race with their wealthy owners looking at exciting talents across the continent to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window. Asensio might not want to get into a relegation tussle at the moment and could target a move to an established club over the Magpies, allowing Arsenal a clear pathway to securing his services.
