Xavi reportedly does not want Barcelona to bring Edinson Cavani in from Manchester United in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Joan Laporta has overseen a move to sign Edinson Cavani in the January transfer window. However, Barcelona manager Xavi is uninterested in the Manchester United forward and only wants young players to join his team.

Edinson Cavani joined Manchester United on a free transfer on deadline day in the summer transfer window last year. Initially met with scepticism from fans and pundits alike, the Uruguayan striker proved his naysayers wrong emphatically, making some big contributions for the Red Devils in the 2020/21 season.

However, the ongoing campaign has been slow for Cavani, who has managed just 274 minutes of action in eight appearances, scoring one goal in the process. His situation at Manchester United had piqued the interest of Barcelona.

According to widespread reports, the Catalan giants have been plotting a January move for Cavani, with Joan Laporta having his sights firmly set on the Manchester United forward. The interest from Barcelona does make sense, considering Xavi does not have a single recognised striker at his disposal apart from Luuk de Jong.

Sergio Aguero is indefinitely sidelined due to a heart condition, while Martin Braithwaite is unavailable for the foreseeable future due to a long-term knee injury. The aforementioned Luuk de Jong has been a dud since his arrival on loan from Sevilla in the summer, with Barcelona legend Luis Suarez Miramontes lambasting the Dutch forward.

So, Barcelona must sign a striker in the January transfer window, with Cavani a viable target. However, Xavi is not interested in bringing the 34-year-old into his squad, as he wants to primarily sign younger players instead of those who are at the fag end of their careers.

In theory, the Manchester United forward would have been an ideal addition as he can hit the ground running and be a short-term solution. However, with Xavi having no intention of landing him, it looks like Barcelona will need to set their sights elsewhere in search of a striker for the January transfer window.
