Transfer News: Newcastle eye Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has emerged as a top target for Newcastle United ahead of the January transfer window.

According to Daily Mail, Newcastle United are set to go all out for Harry Winks in the upcoming January transfer window. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has emerged as a transfer priority for the club, with new coach Eddie Howe desperate to add some proven Premier League experience in the engine room.

Winks himself is keen on leaving Tottenham after having fallen out of favour under ex-managers Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo. He has featured in only two Premier League games this season, mustering a total of just 60 minutes of action. He has evidently fallen down the pecking order, and it might be time to move on.

The Englishman could potentially return to the fold under the leadership of the newly-appointed Antonio Conte, but he is once again likely to play a bit-part role, as the Italian primarily favours Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele.

Newcastle United, though, are ready to offer him an opportunity to revive his career by welcoming him to St. James’ Park in the January transfer window. Winks has been identified as an ideal man to reinforce the club’s midfield unit by Howe, who believes his side lacks the creativity in the middle of the park.

With 180 competitive appearances for Tottenham Hotspur and ten caps for England, Winks can offer a wealth of experience to Newcastle United. Whether or not he can offer the creativity remains doubtful, but he can prove to be an ideal midfield partner for Jonjo Shelvey, who could be a key player for Newcastle in the Eddie Howe era.

However, the Magpies are not the only club interested in the services of Winks. The Spurs academy graduate is also courted by league rivals Everton and Aston Villa, so we could possibly be in for an interesting transfer tussle this January.

As for Tottenham, they are unlikely to be fazed by the departure of Harry Winks. The 25-year-old clearly has no future at the club, and his sale could potentially serve as a financial boost for the Lilywhites, helping them in their pursuit of January targets like Weston McKennie.
