Barcelona and Real Madrid are reportedly in a transfer tussle to sign 21-year-old Danish forward Mikkel Damsgaard from Sampdoria.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona and Real Madrid are set to go head-to-head in pursuit of Mikkel Damsgaard. The two biggest La Liga clubs are preparing to launch the offensive for the 21-year-old Sampdoria forward in next summer’s transfer window.
Damsgaard joined Sampdoria from Nordsjaelland in the summer of 2020 and has since come a long way. The Danish international has not been prolific for the Serie A outfit, with just two goals and four assists in 45 appearances.
However, his exploits for his national side at UEFA Euro 2020 earlier this year have shown that the 21-year-old is a player worth investing in. As a result, Damsgaard has been linked with some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus. As things stand, Barcelona and Real Madrid are keen on signing him.
The interest from Barcelona is hardly surprising, considering their inconsistencies this season. The Catalan giants have struggled to put opponents away, with injuries further compounding their misery; as a result, they have been linked with several attackers of late, including Raheem Sterling, Dani Olmo and Dejan Kulusevski.
To that end, Damsgaard is also a viable target for Barcelona, with the 21-year-old’s versatility further making him an appealing prospect. On the other hand, Real Madrid are reportedly looking to offload Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale, who have all been sub-par recently.
As a result, Los Blancos have been linked with forwards like Ferran Torres, Florian Wirtz and Luiz Henrique, with Damsgaard also an option worth considering. That the 21-year-old can also slot in as a creative midfielder further explains why Real Madrid would want to sign him.
According to Fichajes, Barcelona and Real Madrid will place their offers for the Sampdoria forward next summer. However, with his price tag still unknown, it is unclear whether the Blaugrana can afford to swoop the Dane away from the Serie A club. So, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Damsgaard as he continues to attract the biggest clubs in Europe.
