Transfer News: Barcelona offered chance to sign Neymar

Paris Saint-Germain are considering selling Neymar, with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi reportedly ready to offer the attacker to Barcelona.

A recent report from El Nacional has offered an update on Neymar’s situation at Paris Saint-Germain. The attacker has not enjoyed the best of seasons so far, which has led to speculations over his long-term future in the French capital. It appears PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is considering selling the Brazilian, with FC Barcelona emerging as a potential destination.

Neymar had played a key role in helping PSG secure the signing of Lionel Messi in the summer. However, the attacker has struggled to impose himself alongside his old Barcelona teammate, scoring just three goals in all competitions so far. Each of his goals have come in Ligue 1, with the 29-year-old yet to score a single goal in his three Champions League appearances.

With 90 goals and 55 assists in 127 competitive matches, Neymar has a stellar track record for PSG. But it appears he is seemingly getting overshadowed by the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi. His underwhelming performances have not helped his cause either, with PSG now considering a sale in an attempt to get him off the wage bill.

The Brazilian’s current contract in Paris expires in 2025, but it appears PSG cannot keep up with the rising wage demands of three of their star forwards. As a result, Les Parisiens are prepared to sacrifice Neymar, should they manage to convince Mbappe to sign a new deal at the club and prolong his stay at Parc des Princes.

It could be a difficult task given the Frenchman is seemingly desperate to join Real Madrid next summer. Los Blancos are even reportedly lining up a January swoop for the attacker and a potential sale could see Neymar remaining at PSG.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, though, is open to offering Barcelona the opportunity to snap up their former star. It is an ambitious proposition given the Catalans are suffering from a major financial crisis and are primarily eyeing moves for soon-to-be free agents like Denis Zakaria.

Even in the attacking department, Xavi is primarily targeting cost-effective alternatives, as he looks to shore up his options in the final third. Raheem Sterling, for one, has emerged as a January target for the Blaugrana and a loan move could soon be settled.

Neymar’s hefty wage demands, in that regard, may put off Barcelona. The two parties have also bred slight animosity over the years, with the Brazilian attacker notably filing a lawsuit in 2019 over unpaid wages. Hence, a potential reunion at Camp Nou is almost out of the question, for the time being.
