Manchester United have reportedly opened discussions with Dani Olmo, a priority target for Barcelona.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Dani Olmo is in talks with Manchester United over a move in a future transfer window. The 23-year-old RB Leipzig playmaker is also being tailed by Barcelona, who have identified their former academy ace as a priority target.
Dani Olmo is widely regarded as one of the best attackers in the Bundesliga, having taken his career to new heights since joining RB Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb in January 2020. A regular feature for club and country, the Spanish international has made 67 appearances for Die Roten Bullen, chipping in with 12 goals and 14 assists in the process.
His progress at the Red Bull Arena has not gone unnoticed, with the 23-year-old invariably attracting some of the biggest clubs in Europe. Two of Olmo’s prospective suitors are Barcelona and Manchester United.
Barcelona attempted to sign Olmo in the summer transfer window only to leave it too late to make their move for the former La Masia trainee. However, the Blaugrana remain intent on signing the Spanish international, with reports claiming he is their priority target.
The interest in Olmo makes sense, considering the uncertainty surrounding the future of Ousmane Dembele. In addition to possibly being a wide attacking option, the 23-year-old could even slot in as part of the midfield setup, reprising the no. 8 role for Barcelona with ease. On the other hand, Manchester United could sign him as a long-term replacement for Paul Pogba.
Like Pogba, Olmo is capable of playing in midfield as well as a wide attacker. And with the French international in the final year of his Manchester United contract, the RB Leipzig ace could be a like-for-like replacement, which explains why Manchester United are keen on signing him.
According to El Nacional, Manchester United are currently in talks with Olmo, which suggests an offer could be on the cards. However, it has also been added that the player would prefer rejoining Barcelona over any other suitor.
With Olmo ready to snub Manchester United to return to Barcelona, it will be interesting to see if the Red Devils can do anything to turn his head. As things stand, Barcelona lead the race to sign the 23-year-old playmaker, and it remains to be seen if he leaves Leipzig in January or next summer.
