Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Kieran Trippier and have opened talks to sign the 31-year-old English defender.
According to Spanish transfer expert Guillem Balague on BBC Radio5, as relayed by The Sun, Kieran Trippier is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies have already begun talks with La Liga champions Atletico Madrid over a possible move for the 31-year-old defender.
Kieran Trippier joined Atletico Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2019. Since then, the English international has been a key figure for Los Rojiblancos while remaining a regular feature for his national side.
To date, the 31-year-old has made 83 appearances for the reigning La Liga champions, chipping in with 11 assists along the way. His exploits in the last two years have captured the attention of some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. Manchester United had been keen on signing him in the summer transfer window but could not land him. The latest club in pursuit of Trippier are Newcastle United.
The Magpies are set to undergo a squad overhaul following the takeover by the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund. Among those, the right-back slot will likely be reinforced by Newcastle and for a good reason.
The current right-backs in the first-team squad are Emil Krafth and Javier Manquillo, while Jacob Murphy has also been deployed as a makeshift right-back on a few occasions. Trippier would be a major upgrade on each of the names mentioned above, which is why he is a viable target for Newcastle United.
According to Guillem Balague, who spoke to BBC Radio5 (h/t The Sun), Newcastle United are already in talks with La Liga champions Atletico Madrid over a move for the 31-year-old. The Spanish transfer expert said, “I hear from Atletico Madrid that Newcastle are really interested in getting Trippier and they have started negotiations with his people. I am not sure if they will get him or not.”
According to recent reports, Manchester United could return for Trippier in the January transfer window, although Balague has not mentioned them in his comments. What remains to be seen is if Newcastle United launch the offensive for the English defender and whether they can secure his services with their offer.
