Liverpool are ready to look at Mikel Merino again, probably in January, as Jurgen Klopp searches for a viable midfielder for his squad.

According to Fichajes, Liverpool are ready to reignite their interest in Mikel Merino with a view of bringing the midfielder to Anfield. The 25-year-old certainly won’t come cheap or even easily considering the interest from other big clubs who remain in the hunt.

Liverpool have started the season firing on all cylinders, with Mohamed Salah leading the charge from the front. They have already qualified for the knockout phase in the Champions League and remain in the hunt for the top spot in the Premier League, sitting tightly in second place below leaders Chelsea.

There were plenty of calls to Jurgen Klopp in the summer to reinforce his squad with some astute signings, specifically in the midfield area. Instead, Liverpool only made one senior signing by bringing in defender Ibrahima Konate and overlooked recruitment in midfield despite Georginio Wijnaldum’s move to PSG.

The Dutchman had played a crucial role in Liverpool’s previous success, helping them win the Champions League and Premier League titles. The midfielder’s absence hasn’t reflected on their performances this season, but there are telltale signs that Klopp might need to address refreshing his central options sooner rather than later.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have struggled with injuries since they joined the club. Even Fabinho has struggled with niggling problems this season and in the past. Meanwhile, James Milner, captain Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are either already in their twilight years or approaching the final phases of their careers.

Curtis Jones is the only real prospect alongside Harvey Elliot, who remains out for the foreseeable future with an ankle injury. So in the next phase, Klopp will feel the need to bring in a reliable option to provide consistency and refresh the midfield department.

Mikel Merino is one of the players recently linked with a move to Merseyside. The midfielder has played a crucial role in Real Sociedad’s rise to the top of La Liga charts this season. From a midfield position, the Spanish international has posted two goals and as many assists in all competitions.

Liverpool are interested in the 25-year-old as he provides specific attributes in midfield. Merino can cover plenty of ground with his ability as a box-to-box player, while his physical characteristics to shrug off challenges is a big plus for any Premier League side.

However, Liverpool are not alone pursuing the midfielder, as bigwigs from Spain such as Real Madrid have him on their radar. Barcelona are also reportedly interested, while there could be interest from some other Premier League clubs if he becomes available.

However, with his contract lasting until 2025, Real Sociedad will extract top value for their star if any club comes in with interest. As for Liverpool, they will be eager to bring Merino to the club, although the final decision will be with Klopp.
