Transfer News: PSG front-runners to sign Paul Pogba

Real Madrid have reportedly fallen behind Paris Saint-Germain in the race to sign Manchester United contract rebel Paul Pogba.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Paris Saint-Germain are the front-runners to sign Paul Pogba on a Bosman move in next summer’s transfer window. The Manchester United contract rebel is also a target for Real Madrid, who are now trailing the French giants in his pursuit.

Paul Pogba is currently in his second stint with Manchester United, having returned to Old Trafford from Juventus in the summer of 2016. However, the ongoing spell with the Red Devils has been a hit and miss experience for the French international, who has tended to switch off and produce absolute howlers now and then.

The same has been the case in the 2021/22 season, as after a strong start to the new campaign, the 28-year-old has been extremely disappointing, even though he still has an impressive tally of seven assists in 13 games. Manchester United, meanwhile, are in a precarious position over his long-term future, with Pogba in the final year of his current deal. Such a situation has alerted Real Madrid and PSG, among others.

Real Madrid have been hot on the trails of Pogba for quite some time now, with the player being linked as a key target for them in each of the last half a dozen years, if not more. The interest in the 2018 FIFA World Cup does make sense, though, seeing as Luka Modric is in the twilight of his career.

With Toni Kroos well into his thirties, Pogba is just the kind of player who could come in at the peak of his powers to be a long-term solution in midfield. However, Real Madrid appear to be facing a losing battle in pursuit of the Manchester United contract rebel, with PSG in pole position to land him.

PSG have also been keen on signing Pogba for a while now, with the eagerness to sign him justified. That is because Ander Herrera is on the wrong side of 30, while Marco Verratti has had his fair share of injury woes in the last couple of years. So, the Manchester United midfielder is an ideal candidate to bolster the PSG midfielder.

Apart from Real Madrid and PSG, Juventus are also interested in the 28-year-old. However, as per the report, PSG are touted as the favourites in pursuit of Pogba, and it remains to be seen if he indeed returns to his homeland next summer if he runs down his deal with Manchester United.
