Transfer News: Leeds United, West Ham United battle Tottenham for Raul de Tomas

Tottenham are reportedly facing stiff competition from Leeds United and West Ham United in pursuit of Raul de Tomas, valued at €45 million by Espanyol.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, the race to sign Raul de Tomas appears to be intensifying with every passing week. The Espanyol striker, who has a €45 million price tag, is being courted by Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and West Ham United.

Raul de Tomas has come leaps and bounds since joining Espanyol from Benfica in January 2020. While he was unavailable to inspire the Periquitos to escape relegation from La Liga, the 27-year-old ensured that their exile from the top-flight lasted just a year, finishing 2020/21 as the top scorer in a promotion-clinching campaign in the second division.

The Spaniard has started the new season strongly, with six goals and two assists in 11 La Liga outings. And, de Tomas’ progress has duly been noted by some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with several Premier League clubs hot on his trails. Some of these prospective suitors are Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and West Ham United.

Spurs remain in a tricky situation when it comes to the future of Harry Kane, who has been tipped to call it quits at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January. Even if the England captain stays put at the club, signing a striker could come in handy for the north Londoners, making de Tomas a viable target.

As for Leeds United, they do have a strong first-choice striker in Patrick Bamford. However, if his injury woes have proven something, it is that it is imperative that the Whites sign another striker, especially with Rodrigo Moreno blowing hot and cold since arriving from La Liga outfit Valencia.

Finally, the interest from West Ham does make sense, seeing as they have been hard in search of a striker since the January transfer window. Indeed, since the departure of Sebastien Haller, the Hammers have been eager to land a replacement but have been unsuccessful in doing so. However, West Ham could look to make things right in January, with de Tomas an option worth considering.

However, signing the 27-year-old will cost a sizable sum, with Espanyol set to demand €45 million in exchange for his services. What now remains to be seen is if Tottenham, Leeds and West Ham act upon their interest in de Tomas in January or if they are forced to wait till next summer to launch the offensive for him.
