Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing 26-year-old Serbian midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio.
According to a report by Fichajes, Real Madrid are keen on signing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio. The 26-year-old Serbian midfielder is viewed as a potential option long-term replacement for Luka Modric in the first-team setup at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic joined Lazio from KRC Genk in the summer of 2015 and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the best midfielders on show in Serie A. One of the mainstays for the Biancocelesti, the player has racked up 258 appearances while chipping in with 50 goals and 40 assists along the way.
His style of play has often drawn comparisons to Paul Pogba while the 26-year-old’s exploits have invariably captured the attention of some of the biggest clubs in Europe. And as thing stand, one of his prospective suitors are Real Madrid.
The Merengues did bolster their midfield in the summer transfer window by signing Eduardo Camavinga from Stade Rennais. And while Federico Valverde is a potential long-term solution in midfield, the need for another midfielder could crop up soon for Real Madrid and for good reason.
That is because Luka Modric is in the twilight of his career while Casemiro and Toni Kroos are also approaching the final phases of their respective careers. In addition, Dani Ceballos and Isco are tipped to be on the exit trail at Real Madrid, who will, therefore, rightly need to invest in a midfielder, with Donny van de Beek among those linked with them.
Another player who appears to be high on their wishlist is Youri Tielemans, with recent reports suggesting that they might have taken the lead in the race to sign him. And now, Milinkovic-Savic has emerged as a viable target as well for Real Madrid.
According to the report, a move for Milinkovic-Savic will be made as part of the succession plan for Modric, Kroos and Casemiro. What now remains to be seen is if Real Madrid firm up their interest in the 26-year-old anytime soon or if they turn their attention towards some other alternative.
