Transfer News: Manchester United join Newcastle in Wesley Fofana race

Manchester United are prepared to rival Newcastle United in the race to sign Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana this January.

According to an exclusive report from But!Sainte, Newcastle United are preparing a Leicester City raid for the pursuit of Wesley Fofana. The Premier League outfit apparently has a budget of €220 million to reshape their team after the complete takeover by a Saudi-backed consortium, that has effectively made them one of the richest clubs in the world.

However, the Magpies are set to face stiff competition from Manchester United, in the race to sign Fofana. The Leicester City defender is being highly rated by the club and they are intent on luring him to Old Trafford, in the upcoming January transfer window.

Formerly of Saint-Etienne, Wesley Fofana joined Leicester last summer, for a fee of €35 million. It has proved to be a bargain for the Foxes, as the youngster has seemingly established himself as one of the best young centre-backs in Europe, thanks to his consistent performances under Brendan Rodgers.

Indeed, the Frenchman’s pace, aggression and versatility have put a host of top European clubs on high alert, as they consider him as one for the future. The same attitude is shared by Manchester United, who are in the market for a new centre-back that can offer competition for the likes of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

Fofana fits the bill well, having already proven himself in the Premier League. It makes him a slightly safer option when compared to another defensive target in Jules Kounde. At the age of just 20, the Leicester City starlet can prove to be a smart investment for the club, as he can emerge as the main defensive figurehead for the Red Devils in the years to come.

Newcastle United, too, are keen on establishing Fofana as their main defensive asset, someone who can initially serve as a youth prodigy before eventually becoming a leader in the club’s quest to become a football powerhouse.

However, these aren’t the only clubs interested in the services of Wesley Fofana, who is being targeted as a summer option for Spanish giants Real Madrid. Being a non-English club, it will be a lot more convincing sale for Leicester City as well, as the Foxes look to avoid further strengthening their direct rivals.
