Transfer News: Victor Lindelof on AS Roma radar

AS Roma are interested in Manchester United star Victor Lindelof who has failed to hold onto his starting position at Old Trafford this season

According to Calciomercato, Italian giants AS Roma are interested in securing the services of Manchester United star Victor Lindelof.

The 27-year-old Swedish international has been with the Red Devils for over four years now. He has since made 170 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring three goals and assisting six more. Despite the numbers, Lindelof has struggled to fulfil his potential consistently at Old Trafford. A defensive colossus for the Swedish national side, the 27-year-old has often sported the Jekyll and Hyde role at United.

The signing of Raphael Varane in the summer was a pivotal moment for both player and club. The French World Cup winner is the defacto partner for skipper Harry Maguire in defence, shunting Lindelof into a backup role. At best, the Swede is now the third choice centre-back and faces a fight on his hands to secure his first XI spot.

While it is difficult to see him beat both Maguire and Varane, he could find better fortunes elsewhere should he decide to move. AS Roma could provide him with an escape route and the opportunity to play regular football. They have, however, been put off by United’s valuation of €25million of the player. Whether that asking price is negotiable remains to be seen.

A move to the Italian capital will see Lindelof link up with former boss Jose Mourinho. It was, in fact, under the 58-year-old’s leadership that the Swede arrived at United from SL Benfica. He could use a player of the 27-year-old’s talents in Italy.

Roma are smarting from a 6-1 humbling they received from minnows Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Conference League last night. Speaking after the game, Mourinho admitted that the lack of quality in his side was clear for all to see. He will certainly address one major position by securing Lindelof’s services.

Lindelof is an excellent player who often excels for the national side. Given the right circumstances and management, he could go on to become a leading player. A presence in the air and in possession of an excellent passing range, the Swede could prove to be a dynamic signing for Roma. He could very well prove himself to be the best defender in the Roma roster.

Both Varane and Maguire are young enough to form a long term partnership for the Red Devils. At 27, Lindelof should be playing regularly and is unlikely to receive it at United if his rivals are fit. If that continues to be the case, he is better served moving elsewhere.

Varane’s recent injury has seen the Swedish ace thrust back into the lineup. He now has an opportunity to remind everyone of his qualities and potentially even convince Roma to go all out for him in the coming windows.
