Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among clubs keeping tabs on the situation of AS Roma midfield prodigy Ebrima Darboe.
According to a report from Tutto Mercato Web, Tottenham Hotspur ‘like’ AS Roma’s defensive midfielder Ebrima Darboe and are monitoring his contract situation with the Italian capital outfit.
Darboe has been with Roma since 2019 and has made rapid strides through the ranks. After making over 50 appearances for the Primavera outfit, the 20-year-old broke into the first-team towards the latter stages of the last season under then-manager Paulo Fonseca and made a solid impression.
Game-time has not been forthcoming under Jose Mourinho this season, however, with Darboe featuring just two times across all competitions. Furthermore, with his contract expiring in 2023, there have been question marks over his long-term future at Stadio Olimpico. And Tottenham are among clubs that admire the youngster and are keeping tabs on the development.
Tottenham had been credited with an interest in the 20-year-old Roma starlet earlier this year in May as well, but a move never materialised. As things stand, the Lilywhites have Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp, Harry Winks as options in the defensive midfield position.
However, there are uncertainties surrounding the future of Winks, who has been rarely used by manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Indeed, the England international has been linked with a January exit from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Everton among clubs looking at the Spurs academy product.
Should he depart, there will be a hole in the midfield department that the north Londoners would need to fill, considering as they will need proper squad depth to go far in the UEFA Europa Conference League while competing strongly in domestic competitions. Darboe, to that end, can be a decent option as a squad player who can grow into a regular with experience and game-time.
A move for AS Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni has also been mooted, but the Roma starlet would cost much lesser for Tottenham while there is not a lot of competition for his signing either, although the Lilywhites will have to stave off interest from London rivals Fulham. Roma, for their part, are trying to negotiate a new contract with Darboe. So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 20-year-old.
