Transfer News: Real Madrid keen on re-signing Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham

Real Madrid are reportedly keen on re-signing Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, but at a lesser price than the €40 million buyback clause.

According to a report from Transfer Market Web, Real Madrid are intent on bringing former defender Sergio Reguilon back to the club from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window next year.

A Real Madrid academy product through and through, Reguilon made his first-team breakthrough in 2018 under then-manager Julen Lopetegui and made a decent impression. However, the return of Zinedine Zidane as manager towards the end of the season meant that the left-back saw opportunities reduce.

Reguilon spent the following season out on loan at Sevilla and helped them win the UEFA Europa League but still was unable to convince Zidane of handing him a spot in the Real Madrid setup. The 24-year-old was sold to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window of last year, a move that the Spanish capital club are now said to be regretting.

While Los Blancos have captain Marcelo as an option at left-back, the Brazilian’s form has been on a sharp decline in recent years and he has become, at best, a fringe player, who is being linked with an exit. Ferland Mendy, meanwhile, has struggled with injuries since the backend of the last season. Reports have even claimed that new boss Carlo Ancelotti does not favour him and would be open to a sale.

Such a scenario would leave Real Madrid with the young Miguel Gutierrez as the only proper left-back within the squad. David Alaba has been used as a centre-back where he has excelled so far while utility man Nacho Fernandez is not getting any younger either. So, the Merengues will need to bring in a new left-sided full-back come summer.

And, as per the aforementioned report, they are targeting the potential re-signing of Reguilon. Since joining Tottenham, the 24-year-old has made 45 appearances, registering seven assists. While there have been a few missteps along the way, he has largely proven to be a fine signing for the Lilywhites, while he has also become a member of the Spain national team squad.

Real Madrid, like they do with sales of most homegrown players, inserted a buyback clause for Reguilon, which stands at €40 million. However, as per the report, they are unwilling to match that figure and want to negotiate a lower fee with Tottenham for the 24-year-old. Los Blancos hope that the club’s good relationship with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy may help them settle on a smaller sum.

It now remains to be seen if Real Madrid do make a swoop for Reguilon come summer next year or look elsewhere to bolster their options.
