Transfer News: Liverpool interested in Josip Brekalo

Liverpool are reportedly among the clubs interested in the services of Josip Brekalo, who could leave Torino in the near future.

A recent report from Transfer Market Web has offered an update on the future of Josip Brekalo. The 23-year-old winger had moved to Torino in the summer, on a season-long loan deal from VfL Wolfsburg, could be available in the market as the Serie A club plot to move him on after signing him permanently for just €15 million.

It has put multiple clubs across Europe on red alert, with Liverpool, for one, keeping a close eye on Brekalo’s situation at Torino. Formerly of Dinamo Zagreb, the 23-year-old has made a steady start to his career in Serie A, scoring one goal in his four appearances so far.

The Croat has played a vital role in the club’s offensive department. But his future in Turin appears to be in doubt as clubs circle around him, especially after a successful spell in the Bundesliga that saw him being involved in 30 goals in 117 appearances.

While Brekalo might not particularly seem like a productive winger, he is certainly a prolific chance creator – a traditional winger who can attack the byline and whip crosses into the box. The 23-year-old can be extremely dangerous on the counter as well, thanks to his pace and ability to drift past defenders at ease.

It goes hand in hand with Jurgen Klopp’s philosophy at Liverpool as they do like quick and direct counter-attacking football. It is also fair to point out the fact that the Reds are in the market for a new winger who can supplement the ageing offensive trifecta of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Not to mention, Salah is facing an uncertain future at Anfield, with his current contract expiring in 2023. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged the club to renew his contract immediately, but there has been no breakthrough yet.

In fact, it might be one of the reasons behind Liverpool’s interest in Josip Brekalo. The Croatian international might not be a direct replacement for Salah, but he can certainly add that extra depth that could be useful before the Reds eventually sign a more quality player like Ismaila Sarr of Watford.
