Real Madrid are reportedly interested in Edinson Cavani and could launch a January move for the Manchester United striker.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Edinson Cavani is the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a move in the January transfer window. The Manchester United striker is being eyed as a short-term investment before they eventually make Los Blancos move for Erling Haaland.
Edinson Cavani joined Manchester United in the summer of 2020 as a free agent after the termination of his deal with Paris Saint-Germain. His arrival was greeted with a sense of skepticism but he has gone a long way in allaying those doubts, having made some key contributions for the Red Devils already.
To date, the 34-year-old has made 42 appearances for Manchester United while garnering a tally of 17 goals and six assists in the process. However, upon the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, Cavani has seen his role being reduced, which has created speculation over his future, with Real Madrid now interested in signing him.
The Merengues are hoping to secure his services in the January transfer window, which makes a lot of sense, considering Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz are struggling to make an impression at the Santiago Bernabeu. In fact, Jovic has also been linked with a potential departure from Real Madrid, with Everton recently being linked with him.
Real Madrid’s priority for the centre-forward berth is Erling Haaland, but a move for the Borussia Dortmund striker will only be possible next summer. Till then, Los Blancos are eager to bring in a reinforcement in the January transfer window to take some of the burden off of Karim Benzema.
To that end, Cavani is a viable target for Real Madrid, with the Manchester United striker being the ideal short-term solution for the Spanish giants. In fact, Real Madrid had been keen on signing Cavani in the summer, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Radamel Falcao being the other options on their radar, only for Carlo Ancelotti to prefer a move for Eduardo Camavinga instead.
What now remains to be seen is if Real Madrid make their move for Cavani in the January transfer window. Manchester United’s stance over a potential sale will also be interesting to see as will the player’s own insistence on his future for the second half of the season and beyond.
