Transfer News: Borussia Dortmund eyeing Anthony Martial as Erling Haaland replacement

Borussia Dortmund could move for Manchester United outcast Anthony Martial to replace Erling Haaland if he departs next summer.

According to 90 min, Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Anthony Martial as a possible replacement for Erling Haaland next summer. The Frenchman’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain following underwhelming performances in recent times and the addition of several new attackers.

Anthony Martial showed his true form during the 2019/20 season when he finished the campaign with 17 goals in the Premier League. That tally also remains his best-ever return for Manchester United and he has since failed to replicate that form.

Last season he netted only four goals in 22 Premier League appearances, raising concerns over his future. Manchester United have identified their many problems in attack, signing the likes of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, which has sent the Frenchman further down the pecking order.

Martial has still managed four appearances in the league this season while starting up front in an EFL Cup loss to West Ham Untied. The Frenchman has a contract with Manchester United until 2024 with another year as an option. However, with his future hanging in the balance at Old Trafford, the forward might leave next summer.

Borussia Dortmund could be his next destination as the Bundesliga side evaluate their options for a potential replacement for Erling Haaland. The Norwegian was heavily linked with a transfer away from the club in the previous window but will certainly move on next summer when a release clause is activated in his contract.

There will be no shortage of interest from clubs across Europe and the Premier League in the Norwegian, although Borussia Dortmund would want a quality player as a replacement. Martial still has many years left to play at the top level, but his recent form might be of concern.

The Frenchman has plenty of suitors himself, with Tottenham considering a move for him next summer. There is also possible interest from Spain and Italy, with Inter Milan reportedly keen on Martial to fill the gap left by Romelu Lukaku, who joined Chelsea in the summer.

Paris Saint-Germain were also credited with an interest. Still, considering the options available at Parc des Princes at the moment, it is difficult to see a move for the Manchester United outcast happening soon. Dortmund, meanwhile, could be a good option for the forward, who could revitalise his career in Germany.

Dortmund also reportedly like the prospect of Timo Werner, who is facing uncertain times at Stamford Bridge due to the arrival of Lukaku. However, the Bundesliga side cannot match his current financial package, and hence a deal could prove difficult to conclude.

As for Martial, Dortmund could explore their options next summer, and if things fit in place, a move might materialise. He could be a good option to lead the line, and this reported interest could accelerate if the Frenchman is to perform well whenever he is offered a chance to play at Manchester United.
